Why a medium scale publishing company?
I don't think that a large scale publishing companies would want to publish my magazine because most large scale publishing companies already have these types of magazines which they publish themselves and this would cause competition between their own magazines and lose profit. Small publishing companies would not be interested in publishing my magazine because of competition between my magazine and other magazines of the same type. Small publishing companies would not have the money to support the magazine because the competition would be so high that it would require alot of advertisement to make my magazine noticed because it is new on the market and no one has heard of it. Often people usually buy what they know by previous experiences therefore if a rock fan reads a Kerrang magazine and likes it they automatically assume that its a good magazine. This means that new magazines would struggle to sell.
Advantages and disadvantages of going with a large publishing company
The advantages of going with a big company could be:
- Large publishing companies have access to large amounts of funds which can help to advertise your magazine.
- Large publishing companies own a lot of other magazines which could help advertise your magazine (advertisements in other magazines)
- Large publishing companies have access to large retail stores, this will help your magazine sell when it goes on the market.
- Large publishing companies often have a range of different magazines which cover different audiences, this creates a problem for newly developed magazines because large publishing companies will not be interested due to competition be created between their own magazines.
As i said before a lot of large publishing companies have a multiple range of different magazines which cover a large range of audiences.
- IPC - Country life, Horse and hound, Rugby world, Decanter, Nuts, Mousebreaker and NME, this is just a small section of the amount of magazines they own in total.
Different activities and parts of the magazine
Not all of the profit of a magazine comes from the sales of the actual magazine, a lot of money comes from extra additions to your magazine. These could be:
- Online competitions.
- Subscriptions to particular channels.
- Radio (kerrang).
- Other events ad activities which include the name of the magazine, the audience of the magazine and the genre of the magazine.
